Thoughts, uncensored

I like saying the word, vagina. It shocks people and produces a hilarious effect. Wednesday nights I meet up with fellow college kids (is that a misnomer?) at my church for... I don't know what, really. Tonight we played Taboo, last week we met at a coffee shop to discuss a book, and we've been planning to have a bonfire for the past few weeks now. I guess the word I'm looking for to describe our weekly gathering is fellowship.

Anyways, tonight a group of us were eating dinner, and the desert- a generic berry crumble/pie/tart- was a cheery shade of red. After I mentioned that I only wanted two children coming out of MY vagina, one of the guys(!) thoughtfully remarked about the crumble/pie/tart. Ack!

How did that back fire onto me?

My shoulders are pleasingly sore from the fifty-eleven pushups I did yesterday. Summer is coming, and so are my FLOTUS arms.

One thing that I do exceptionally well? Sing. Just ask my shower head.

10 Things...

I've been reading several blogs for a few years now, but this marks my first foray into producing content of my own. I like to know a little bit about a person before deciding whether or not to make their daily musings apart of my own daily routine. So, in the spirt of doing unto others as I'd have them do unto me...

Ten Things You Don't Know About Me:

1. I can speak passable Mandarin Chinese.

2. I can speak fluent Ubbi-Dubbi. (Just in case Chinese wasn't impressive enough. heh)

3. I am a literal African-American, as my mother was born in the US. However, I consider myself to be
    African.

4. I love to discuss race relations in America, and cried tears of joy when Disney released the Princess and
    the Frog.

5. I never learned how to blow a (gum) bubble, or properly perform a split.

6. I did learn how to ride a bicycle, but only after crashing into both the side of my friend's house and the
    back of her neighbor's car.

7. I love, love, Love to sing.

8. My dream job is to be a working actress and singer, a la Audra McDonald.

9. I ran a 10K last year with my mom and granddad. My granddad finished first. (In my defense, he is a
seasoned marathoner, and he had run that exact race three times previously.)

10. I don't own a camera, so until I eventually buy one, this bliggetty blog will be text only. Sorry.

*Bonus* I like to say unfortunate things like "bliggetty blog"; I once told a customer to "rock and roll" as a
way of saying "have a nice day".

Did anyone pull off a good April Fool's joke today?

Life of the Beloved

Tonight my church's college group gathered at a local coffee shop to discuss a book we've collectively begun to read- "Life of the Beloved" by Henri J.M. Nouwen. The author, who was also a minister, wrote the text as a way of answering spiritual questions posed to him by his non-Chrisitan friend.

While I don't agree with every thing that Nouwen held to be true about God and/or faith, I did appreciate his reassurance that my life is precious to God, and that my time here on Earth is not inconsequential.

Time is a resource that I am discovering is finite. I really want to start making the most of every second of the time allotted to me, so that I will not have reason to be ashamed when my time runs up. Geez, I'm very existential today. I blame all the rain. When it rains I want to curl up with soup and philosophize. I did both of those things today.

I also did some living room Zumba for just over half an hour. In my books, that counts as the biscuit to my previous, pondering two piece. Two piece and a biscuit.

Yep, I went there.

Young Life Crisis Intervention

Stuff happens. Growing up, I always felt as if a special light was shining on my family, illuminating our paths and ensuring us top billing in all our endeavors. I didn't grow up with a lot of money or even a perfect home life, but somehow life always seemed to come up roses.

Until college. Why hello, Young Life Crisis. I lost faith in myself and my ability to ever be a contributing member to society. Sure, I am a little dramatic at times (between this and the spotlight reference above, maybe you have figured out that I love theater and the stage?), but climbing out of a pit is hard work.

So today I offer one tip to any fellow travelers journeying back to Life Uninterrupted: Do one thing every single day that terrifies you. Preferably, write a list of things that scare you, and then tackle the scariest one right away. I'm not referring to random fears like an aversion to trying spicy foods or choosing a new nail color; I specifically want you to address things about your present situation that give you anxiety.

Money is my biggest fear right now. I worry constantly that I will not have enough to take care of myself and pay back my loans. To allay my anxiety I am forcing myself to be a financially sound person. I am learning how to budget. I am already good at saving money. I am making myself make payments on time, even though my bank account weeps softly at the loss. I am making myself see that money is just that: money.

Addressing the biggest fear straight away is empowering and gives you momentum to dominate the others. Hopefully. You know, I'm still journeying with you. Let's meet back here in a year's time to compare notes. Deal?

The End

Kidding- this is most definitely the beginning. I'm Hanson- a young ready-for-the-world type of woman. Ever need to be your own encourager? I do. There are many things that I have not yet learned how to do well, but today I focus on one thing that I do exceptionally well.

I am a great story teller. My tales (somewhat lengthy, my brother would interject) are funny and cheery; the best sort of tale to tell. I don't go for anything to do with horror or dangerous suspense.

The last scary film I watched was Gothika, back in the day. I made it through the whole screening, but afterwards, when nature called, I found myself alone in a dimly lit bathroom stall, eerily similar to the holding cells in the movie I had just seen. As  a self-respecting Black woman I refused to ignore the signs of  Solo Minority Targeted for Attack in Horror Flick: I booked it out of there and called for back-up so I could return to safely wash my hands. Hygiene is important.

What is one thing that you are good at?
